Hi John and Lowell,
Here’s a thought on the issue of presidential candidates and their religious preferences:
In the 2004 presidential election, a vote for George W. Bush was not a vote for the United Methodist Church and a vote for John Kerry was not a vote for the Roman Catholic Church.
In the 2008 Democratic presidential primary: a vote for Hillary Clinton will not be a vote for the United Methodist Church; a vote for Barack Obama will not be a vote for the United Church of Christ; and a vote for John Edwards will not be a vote for the United Methodist Church.
In the 2008 Republican primary: a vote for Rudy Giuliani will not be a vote for the Roman Catholic Church; a vote for John McCain will not be a vote for the Episcopal Church; and a vote for Mitt Romney will not be a vote for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Remember that all of the Protestant denominations were (and still are in some Catholic and Orthodox circles) originally considered as heretical cults. Creedal Christians should be careful with their use of the label “cult” when referring to other religions.
