A Cyber-Internship Opportunity

Along with new media, the internet, and the phenomenon of blogging has come an opportunity for student internships that is quite new: A political “cyber-internship.”

What Is Article VI Blog?

Article VI Blog (http://www.article6blog.com) is about the intersection of religion and politics in the 2008 presidential election. The blog’s focus is on the candidacy of Mitt Romney who, as is widely known, is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints (the “Mormons”), but we address the topic wherever it arises, regardless of candidate, religion, or political party,

Who Writes This Blog?

The authors of Article VI Blog are John Schroeder, an Evangelical Christian, and Lowell Brown, am a Mormon. John and Lowell are frequent guests on the Hewitt radio program, and their blog is widely cited as an authority on the issues they cover. You can read more about us on the blog here: http://www.article6blog.com/about/, or you can go to the site and look for the “About Article VI Blog” button. Biographical summaries for the two authors are here: http://www.article6blog.com/about-lowell/, and http://www.article6blog.com/about-john/.

Why An Internship?

Article VI Blog been far more successful than Messrs. Brown and Schroeder had ever imagined it would be, and they find themselves in need of help. They are looking hard for one or two interns. We see this as an unusual but fascinating internship for the right person. It would be managed almost entirely by e-mail and telephone. John and Lowell will happily to work with the sponsoring organization and the intern to arrange for academic credit for their work on the blog. Of course, John and Lowell will cover any extraordinary expenses the student might incur for travel or other similar activities.

Qualifications and Scope of Duties

The right applicant will be a student who is computer and Internet-literate, is a good writer and researcher, has good telephone and e-mail skills, and is interested in politics, religion, and the 2008 election. The interns will help John and Lowell with research (virtually all Internet-based) and with the various administrative duties that need attention, such as arranging interviews, follow-ups, finding news stories on which we can comment, analyzing polling data, and the like.

Article VI Blog has already conducted telephone interviews, later transcribed and posted on the blog, with Fr. Richard John Neuhaus of First Things; John McIntyre of Real Clear Politics; David and Nancy French (the proprietors of the well-known blog, Evangelicals for Mitt); Hugh Hewitt; Stan Guthrie of Christianity Today Magazine; and others. As the popularity of the blog as grown and the 2008 election cycle heats up, we are planning many more interviews with significant figures in the world of religion and politics. Our interns will help us set up those interviews and could help us prepare interview questions, draft and edit our posts, and perhaps even publish an occasional guest post.

We would expect 8-10 hours each week from the intern, although that is flexible. We are new to the idea of interns and will work together with our interns as we essentially invent this “cyber-internship.”

The internship will also offer considerable schedule flexibility, since all the equipment the student needs is a computer with a high-speed internet connection. The work can be done from anywhere and at any hour of the day. We think this would be a great opportunity, for example, for a student interested in political journalism or who simply wants to learn the world of blogging. We also have some excellent connections to certain Republican and journalistic circles and can promise the student exposure in those circles.

The intern could start at any time. We expect that our needs will grow over time as the 2008 campaign unfolds.
