An example of news media analysis of The Question
We won’t add much comment here, except to commend Ben Smith for his fairness and to point out Joe Klein’s self-assured intellectual arrogance in trying to explain what goes on in the minds and hearts of Mormons everywhere, including Romney’s. (Note the snarky Klein reference to sacred Mormon undergarments and how Smith good-naturedly slaps Klein down for it.)

It’s instructive to see how left-of-center journalists like Klein see The Question.

I think Joe Klein effectively answers his own question here. I don’t believe that any group of people, unified by a particular belief, will willingly discuss that belief with an audience so arrogant, so willing to misunderstand. No thinking person would enter into a conversation about Jewish practices by asking, “What’s with the dorky hat?” Nor would a questioner approach a Catholic, wanting to truly understand transubstantiation, and say, “You eat dead people?” If Mr. Klein truly wants to know why Mormons don’t readily discuss sacred things, I think he has his answer. He IS the answer. Mormons don’t want sacred things mocked. The fact that this point seems to elude Mr. Klein is reason enough for me to dismiss his opinion as just that: an opinion by someone who clearly already has his mind made up about how all Mormons think and feel . . . and has no clue.

Klein may be just uninformed but I don’t think so given he is part of the Democrat media machine. He doesn’t make snarky comments without having thought them out first or been given marching orders by the Obama campaign. He knows full well what baptism for the dead is. He also knows it is not baptism OF the dead. As this campaign rolls on and in the Romney presidency, Klein and others will attack Mitt’s religion constantly. That will provide more free publicity for the Church and cause more interest in it if only to find out if what the leftists say is true. Even better, in other parts of the world where the day-to-day political diatribe is not as public, the missionary work can only be enhanced.
