I think the rift is much wider than a lot of Republican loyalists want to admit--and, IMO, it is a bit myopic to assume that it is mostly religiously motivated voters who are disaffected. Indeed, if the Republican Party cares about mending fences--let alone making common cause with--Tea Party Conservatives (for lack of a better term), which I think includes a lot of Palin supporters very much put off by the treatment she has received at the hands of some "more establishment" Republicans, the Party does not help itself much with petty antics like those of Utah's GOP Party Chairman, Dave Hansen, who seems to be in a bit of a snit that Sarah Palin wouldn't do a fundraiser for the party while in Utah for a book signing, at least as reported by Salt Lake City's KSL TV-Radio.

As long as the GOP establishment--which sees itself as more politically astute (as it ought to be as a "real" political party with a history) than the conservative populists whose votes they absolutely depend on for any success at all--refuses to acknowledge and address in substantive ways the reasons for the disaffection felt by many conservatives, the Republican Party risks perpetuating and even widening the rift, which leads to political suicide for them and a quixotic, but nevertheless losing, quest by the Tea Party conservatives.
