What to Make of Palin?
Greetings from England!
The punditry is FULL to the brim of speculation and prognostication regarding Sarah Palin’s resignation as Governor of Alaska.
At this point there are only two things to say:
- It is way to early to figure out all of what happened, why it happened, and what’s next. WAY too early.
- This will change the religious identity landscape in the Republican party. But the how’s are also way to early to tell.
Other than that – patience is the order of the day for the truly serious observer. And now – back to cruising.
Lowell adds: Unlike John, I am simply hiking and jet-skiing, nothing so exotic as a . . . cruise! So I can add some thoughts a bit easier than John can.
I had some political thoughts about Sarah Palin here. On the religio-political side, I will expound a bit on what I said below: A “values voter” candidate who relies on religious conservatives as his or her base will not lead the GOP out of the wilderness. If that’s the role Palin seeks to take on, then we are in for a rocky four years of intra-party strife, a presidential loss in 2012, and further marginalization of that very religious conservative base. There is some evidence that she wants to be much more than simply a candidate acceptable to that base. If so, that’s good for her, and good for all of us.
