First of all, the truly pitiful thing about all of this is that Mike Huckabee cannot see that he has done this to himself—and in the process has created a festering sore between some Mormons and Evangelicals in the political arena.

But in a way only manageable by Huckabee, he is turning lead into personal gold by now leading the charge in the faux GOP vs. Social Conservatives War—and has the political Left laughing all the way to the polls in the mean time.

Of course, the GOP is not happy with the extremist religious-based identity politics that went on during the last cycle, and since Huckabee seems to be aware that much of that is his fault, he has decided to dodge the blame and benefit at the same time by attempting to redefine the argument as the Establishment GOP vs. Social Conservatives, with of course Romney being supported by the now hated “establishment.”

In this way the ever clever Huck covers his own backside, maintains his support and cash flow with the classic “they’re against us” strategy, and recasts Romney in yet another unfavorable light as being the puppet of the “establishment” with Huck as the maverick social conservative hero. Never mind that just a few months ago Huckabee was telling us all that nobody likes Mitt—now Huckabee’s message is that the Mitt led establishment hates social conservatives.

While this all seems to work out well for Huck, it is a dangerous game in perilous times for the GOP. As many commentators have wondered aloud, and I ask again—just how much anti-family value pain must we suffer before the vast majority of social conservatives remember that “We must all hang together or we shall certainly all hang separately.”
