Some Things Are A Little Hard To Swallow…

World Magazine is home to what Lowell described as the most bigoted piece on Romney’s religion from the entire campaign.  That piece was by Joel Belz.  Well, yesterday at their blog, Emily Belz (there has to be a relationship there somewhere!) quotes from Newsweek/WaPO’s “On Faith” and wonders if the current economic crisis might not be very different were Romney in the picture.  It is mostly to elicit comment, and the comments that are there are a little creepy – wisecracks about the Mormon practice of having a cache of basic supplies abound.

Mostly it shows a fixation on the part of World and its readers with religious labels.  It’s small-minded stuff for small-minded people.

Lowell adds:  Sigh.  This reminds of of my teenage years in Utah, when I’d occasionally overhear snarky anti-Mormon comments (often followed by loud laughs) about my religion and its beliefs and customs.  I don’t remember feeling bad, just feeling surprised and disappointed that an adult would engage in such low-brow humor about matters sacred to others.  I guess that’s how I feel about the Belz clan and their fellow-travelers.
