I see you have noted that the existence of religious bias against Mormons is simply assumed with little comment. Why is it that, amidst all the prophetical pomposity that is issued by our political commentariat, almost none of them is willing to say, "You religious bigots should be ashamed of yourselves. You are being UnAmerican in voting against someone because of his religious beliefs, even though his political beliefs are just like yours, while claiming you believe God created all men as equals. You are dishonoring the explicit words of the Constitution you claim to uphold, which holds all religions as equally valid under the law. Where in Christ's teachings about loving our neighbors, and even our enemies, does he say it's OK to hate someone because his religion is different from yours? How can you call yourself a follower of Christ, like Paul who carefully followed Roman law in his appeal to Caesar, when you only tolerate government leaders who are of your own religion? You are dishonoring America, the Constitution, and Christ."

To this observer, it appears that "The Question" has become such a feature of this campaign that it needn't even be invoked explicitly. For example, Dan Shnur writes in the NYT's Campaign Stops writing about why both Romney and Kaine would be "Bad V.P. Picks" on Romney:

Mr. Romney’s ability to motivate the G.O.P. base is even more of an open question. While Mr. McCain is still trying to shore up his support among conservatives, there’s no evidence that Mr. Romney, who lost those voters to John McCain and Mike Huckabee in the primaries, would help close the sale. Already, several religious conservative leaders have come forward warning that naming Mitt Romney would be counterproductive.

Subtlety, however, is apparently lost on a few dunderheads (check out the comments section).
