Certainly, for purposes of our public discourse over the moral course of action in our society, which is the concern of this blog, the appellation "Christian" should be applied to anyone who believes the teachings and life of Jesus Christ, and of his leading disciples, are normative. Anyone who can say "Jesus said this, so I believe it and believe it is a good idea for society" should be accepted as a Christian within our society. Anyone who responds to an appeal to the authority of Christ is a Christian, a follower of Christ.

Over the years, I have been horrified to watch ethnic hostility escalate into deadly fighting: the Irish Protestants and Catholics, the Palestinians and Israelis, the Sunnis and Shiites, the Serbs and the Bosnians. I have wondered why those involved can’t see they are cut from the same cloth, that they have more in common than in dispute, that they are family. Imagine my shock during this primary election process to see tensions escalating between "cousins" in the USA. In the name of the Prince of Peace, we justify hurting one another. John, what a beautiful spirit of understanding you bring to this issue. As you say, we’re family. We have the same Father. We love the same home, America. Thanks to you and Lowell for setting an example, staying above the fray and teaching us so much. Hopefully, we can find common ground and unite in our efforts to strengthen our homes and families. Please keep up the great blog.

Happy Easter!

That was a lovely post. One minor word quibble, though. When you said:

The perversion argument is just silly. They are, in my belief and understanding, wrong, but that is very different from perverse.

you used the wrong word. It should be "perverted" not "perverse." 2 very similar sounding words with the same root, so easy to mess up, but totally different meanings. "Perverse" is generally used to denote "willful" or perhaps "whimsical" contrariness, where "perverted" is always used to denote evil or corruption.

Anyway, I've been reading you for over a year -- love your work, and Lowell's too.

Thanks for such an eloquent statement, and Happy Easter, as all Christians join to reflect on the blessed miracle that He is risen.

We all must justify our standing with our Lord in our own hearts and minds. That wee small voice that comes to us in the quite part of the day, testify of Christ, we are on the right path. John, as a fellow brother and seeker of truth are too on the right path. God Bless, Joe
