THE SPEECH – Live From The Scene

Romney’s speech on religious liberty has just recently concluded. getting out of the room to the computer has been arduous – many people to talk to, press to do, etc. The video of the speech is available here and the text here. Lowell and I need time to digest all this, not to mention travel home, but my initial reaction is a single word – “presidential.”

Mitt Romney today stood up in front of the nation and talked about God and talked about religion in exactly and preecsiely the way presidents of this great nation have throughout history. He has “cut himself out from the herd” as they would say here in Texas. The spin will be endless, we will no doubt be linking and linking over the days to come. Every word will be analyzed again and again, but it is the impression that matters and the impression Mitt Romney left was presidential.

Lowell adds:  We will have photos later; right now we are living the lives of bloggers, as we sit in a rental car in the Bush Library parking lot, posting our initial thoughts.

I agree with John.  The speech was risky, but Romney clearly wanted to do it.  We had the privilege of being in a room full of his supporters, and he joined us just minutes before he gave the speech.  He literally bounced into the room.  This was a speech he very much wanted to give.

I think he was pitch-perfect.  I listened in to Richard Land being interviewed by a gaggle of reporters, and Land was very positive.  He especially appreciated that Romney acknowledged theological differences, but emphasized common ground.  Land really liked the speech, that was clear.

There will be much more to say later.  For now, we can say that this is a historic day.
