Today’s Reading List - February 2, 2007

The blog "Lincoln Logs" notes something we mentioned earlier.  The AP piece now circulating turns to McCain supporters to get a negative read on The Question.  Not just as we noted before, Mosteller, but also a South Carolina State Senator as well.  Given that all his supporters keep opening their yaps on The Question, I wonder what Senator McCain himself thinks about it?

Lowell:  Consider this quote:

On Tuesday, Mosteller, who is a Baptist, said, "The question is: Does Governor Romney support Joseph Smith's doctrines? We as evangelicals don't believe we can go in and change Paul's doctrine. I don't see how you move around this."

Rather than dignify that one with a response, I'll just get out my crystal ball and predict:  Most voters will simply recoil from such statements. Question:  Is there any evidence John McCain is recoiling?  We haven't seen any yet.

Over at First Things, there is an interesting discussion about whether Catholics should call Protestants heretics.  First installment here, second here.  It is remarkably similar to our discussion of the word "cult" on this blog.

CQPolitics mentions money as a "virtual primary" and then does not mention Romney's outstanding one-day effort a couple of weeks ago.  Fascinating!

Speaking of which, down in Alabama there is allegation and response concerning fund-raising.  Couple of interesting facts.  First everyone admits nothing illegal was done, but it is written as if some sort of underhanded conspiracy was at play.  Secondly, the primary reporting about Alabama activity is out of the Boston Globe!  But here is the sentence that really amazes me (from the first link):

Romney did nothing illegal nor unethical, though he can never honestly push for tougher campaign finance laws with a straight face.

Campaign finance is not an issue he has ever mentioned, so…..  But then who has?  Does anyone smell that guy from Arizona?  More interestingly, I think there is a conscious effort to cast any aspersion Romney's way both because he is threatening — and because it plays upon questions about his faith, some legitimate, some prejudiced, and turns them into suspicion.  I don't think this story would have any traction with anyone else, which is sad.

Romney discussed religion briefly on Fox and Friends Wednesday.  Apparently FOXNews has a special forthcoming and they were promoting it in the video linked.  Nothing new really, and the "anchors" are almost inane on the topic.  I hope the American public shows a little more sophistication on the subject than the two big TV bits to date have.

Great get!  Fascinating housing situation.
