Here is the first hint at something I have been beginning to strongly suspect:

I didn’t start paying attention to Romney until the media told me to. Judging by their growing protest against him, I’m starting to like him more and more. The media’s case against Romney can be summed up in one word: Mormon! This catchy retort must have come from the same guy that brought us “Halliburton!” There have been countless newspaper and magazine articles questioning whether a Mormon can be president.

"The Question" is a media construct – a left-leaning media – construct playing on the fears of an uninformed public. (With the possible exception of a few powergrabbing evangelical leaders that the media loves to hold up as representative of all Evangelicals.)   Without the media most Evangelicals have a few questions, easily answered; with it they have "issues."

Hugh Hewitt seems to think Jeb Bush has more-or-less endorsed Romney.  That's some serious conservative credentialling.

So's this…Which Hotline seems to like a lot.

John J Miller from National Review on "The Question."  About the best overview I've seen to date and it supports the view I present in the top item here.

An interesting look at the Ellison religous bigotry issue.  I have been largely silent on the issue because I do think that, provided the religion in question comforms to the generally accepted civil religous ethos, elected officials should be allowed to provide their oaths on their scripture of choice.  However, to my mind, whether the Koran meets the proviso I just set remains an open question.  Certainly, many acting in what they believe is accordance with that book have acted wa…a…ay outside the civil religous ethos.  And while the author is kind to mention Romney, Romney would not choose the Book of Mormon.

Late Update from Lowell:  The Miami Herald thinks Romney was the star of the recent Republican Governors' Conference.

And Tucker Carlson does not think The Question is a big problem for Romney.  Must-see video hereMy favorite phrase:  "The freaky religious vibe."
