Today’s Reading List – November 15, 2006
This is an interesting bit of bloggy analysis on the '08 race. It implies agreement with Evangelical objections to a Mormon without actually saying so directly. Is this a "stealth attack" or genuine inquiry, how can we tell the difference? Will we always be able to? Lowell?
Lowell: I don't think that one was a stealth attack. Sometimes we won't be able to tell when one is occurring, but most of the time we'll know them when we see them.
Speaking of the '08 race, an early overview from the Christian Science Monitor.
The writer doesn't mention Romney's religion, but that's not too surprising; he's the editor of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City.
An interesting look at one section of the church/state line.
Evangelicals, Israel and foreign policy. There is a strong link between Evangelicals and Jews on this one. I think there is a lesson for Evangelicals and Mormons on this one. Lowell, how do the Mormons think about Israel? Lowell: Mormons are overwhelmingly sympathetic to Israel, although the Church takes no position on such matters. Some Mormons, of course, are less sympathetic, just as some are Democrats. Much of that pro-Israel sentiment arises from a general Mormon affinity for the Jewish people, as we discussed a little here.
Romney organizes in "the belly of the beast."
Big time Mormon question here – but not here. Sabato may be great at reading political tea leaves (actually after googling the guy, I think he is even better at self-promotion) but somehow I'll take Pat Robertson's word on evangelical reaction over Sabato's.
