Today’s Reading List - November 10, 2006
Election reflection and the '08 race. Romney appears to have been positioning himself to the right. Ken Mehlman seems to think the party's need to move right is "the message" of this week. Hugh Hewitt seems to think McCain's shenanigans are what hurt this time around. Rush Limbaugh seems to agree with Hugh (see the "must reads"). And Cheat-Seeking Missiles has some wonderful illustrations. I'd say this bit of straw polling holds up those contentions and shows Romney to be pretty darn shrewd. All of which makes this the most unlikely bit of rumor to emerge from this debacle. You know what I think? -I think the MSM loves McCain, but they don't know beans about how the Republican base thinks or how to win Republican primaries.
Lowell: I would vote for McCain cheerfully if he is the nominee. Nevertheless– and I may be wrong about this– I think McCain will self-destruct at some point before he gets nominated. It will be hard for him to do that without the assistance of the MSM, which won't go after McCain the way they went after George Allen; but I still think it will happen.
WHO? has thrown their hat in on the Democratic side? Why is it always the people with no chance who throw their hats in first?
This makes sense to me. Even good red coattails in Mass. are going to be pretty darn short.
In defense of Evangelicals in politics. Meanwhile, one evangelical leader scolds when he should be pitching in. I'm not sure Dobson gets it, he's just a little too naked in his quest for power - real power is gained by helping the party gain, not by trying to hoard it.
Lowell: I liked this:
Of course it's true that a handful of Christian figures reinforce the worst stereotypes of the movement. Their loopy and triumphalist claims are seized upon by lazy journalists and the direct-mail operatives of political opponents.
Yet it is dishonest to disparage the massive civic and democratic contribution of evangelicals by invoking the excesses of a tiny few.
Yes, it's dishonest, but we'll see it continually through election day 2008. And thereafter. We all just need to shine the spotlight on it. As Paul said: "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
As for Dobson, I find his routine– demanding to be catered to– tedious. I wonder if others don't increasingly feel the same way.
