Are Evangelicals and libertarians at odds in side the G.O.P.?  If so, might a Mormon party leader heal the rift, or would he take sides?  Lowell:  If Romney became party leader and helped heal that rift, I don't think it would be because he is a Mormon. Mormons are not libertarian-friendly on cultural-social issues, and neither is Romney.  On top of that, his health plan, with its individual mandate, is anathema to most libertarians.

We're with KLo on this one.  If we talk about Romney's, or any other candidate's appearance, just shoot us.  With the possible exception of Guliani in drag.  Once a guy dresses like a girl, appearance comments are fair game.

Documentaries appear no longer to document anything, but rather to be pure propaganda.  I link to this here because it raises an interesting point.  These filmmakers seek to portray evangelicals by focusing on the nutty fringes.  I wonder if there is not some of that amongst those that worry about Romney's "Evangelical problem"? (HT:RedBlueChristianLowell: I share John's concern.  If there's anything we Mormons know about, it's how selecting an oddball from among our members and putting him or her on the screen can make the whole church look bad.  I am sure that can be done to evangelicals too.  Having been the victims of such distortions, Mormons should be the last ones to victmize other faiths.

The IRS and church and state - why is it always the liberals that seem to get in trouble over this?  I think Rick's comments are right on.

Is McCain committing political suicide with the interrogation policy thing?  I have got to think that if he intends to run as a Republican he is.  Romney is smart to jump on Bush's bandwagon on this one.  Party loyalty will go a long way in the primaries.  Lowell:  Look how much mileage Romney got from the Kathami episode.  There's no political benefit in being soft on terrorists.

'08 won't be cheap.  Which is why I think it's starting so early.

Pat Buchanan is a xenophobe.  (HT: RCP Blog) I do not consider him an "evangelical" figure.  But given his attitude about "outsiders" I wonder if he won't supply the greatest internal resistance to a Mormon candidate?  Lowell:  Good question. Does anyone out there know how Buchanan feels about such faiths as Mormonism, Seventh-day Adventism, etc.?  My guess is that he approves of Mormon cultural conservatism, big Mormon families, etc., but I haven't been able to find anything about that.
