Today’s Reading List - August 3, 2006
Much blogged “campaign” stop for this Friday. Can-do meets Can’t-get-it-done. No, I haven’t come out for Romney, I’m just rapidly losing respect for the Senate Majority Leader.
Apparently, unwarranted pardons are an Arkansas tradition?
Strategery question. As predicted, same sex marriage is leading down the slippery-slope to polygamy. Does a Romney, as a Mormon, hop all over this issue, demonstrating he is steadfastly opposed? - Or does such simply appear to be calling too much attention to his faith? Lowell: I think he’ll just stick with his position on the same-sex marriage issue. If polygamy comes up, my guess is he’ll simply dismiss it as an unacceptable lifestyle. It’s not as if Mormons yearn for the good old days of polygamy. I assure you, we’re all glad we don’t have to live that way, and wonder how the early Mormons did it.
Point and sorta Counter-Point (HT: RedBlueChristian) The issue? - Mixing religion and politics in various ways. This does raise an interesting question for me. Increasingly, I am seeing the Romney near-campaign being used as a platform from which Mormon apologetics can be launched. I do think there is a problem if a religion seeks legitimacy from political involvement. Religious adherence may inform, even dictate a political stance on an issue, but the religion needs to garner its legitimacy and authority on its own. I’m wondering how widespread is the feeling among Mormons that a serious Romney run would grant them greater legitimacy in society at large? Is the CJCLDS doing anything to combat such a tendency, as it obviously is becoming a concern in Evangelical circles.
Lowell: This is such an interesting subject that I am posting separately about it here.
Do not do it Governor, do not sign that bill. I hail from Indiana where there is nothing “official” about basketball - it’s a religion. To my mind this could constitute a violation of the Establishment Clause. Worse, I might have to challenge you to a game of one-on-one and we are both too old for that!
Lowell: As a fellow lover of basketball I must agree. I simply do not associate hoops with Massachusetts.
