Weekend Reading List: July 15-16, 2006

(Updated throughout the weekend.)

Here’s a short but comprehensive article by Kimberly Winston of the Religion News Service, responding to the interest created by the L.A. Times - Bloomberg poll.  She focuses on this interesting aspect of the Romney-religion question:

In order to mute questions about Mormon theology and practice, Romney, like Kennedy, will have to declare his independence from his church — but with a twist: Where voters once needed to know that a candidate’s faith would remain private, many voters today, especially Christian conservatives, need to be assured that a candidate’s faith will guide his decisions -even if, as in Romney’s case, they don’t agree with its doctrine.

I was intrigued by this comment from a person interviewed for the article:

“He’s got to say his faith will have an impact, but his denominational beliefs will not.”

Makes sense to me.

Meanwhile, RedState has the latest in an ongoing discussion on Romney’s pro-life views.  It appears that the post’s author has an agenda (he’s an Allen supporter) so read the comment thread too.

Hugh Hewitt interviewed Romney live on his show last week.  The marriage amendment was one topic covered.  Listen to the podcast here.
