Today’s Reading List
More on Romney’s finances here and here. The latter is a Boston Globe piece and it is both reminiscent of my comment in yesterday’s Reading List that “too much” Mormon money could fuel the flames of religious bigotry and despicable in its efforts to do so. That a typically left, legacy media source, when the left is supposed to be known for its “tolerance,” would do so is ironic. [Lowell adds: I have been thinking about this notion since John raised it yesterday. Why is it significant that Romney is getting donations from wealthy Mormons, when it would not even be noticed if a Catholic, evangelical, or Jewish candidate were getting large sums from co-religionists? I raise this not as a complaint, but as a truly fascinating question to which there are plausible answers– but not for the daily reading list!] [John adds: I think it would be noticed by the left - as an effort to create ‘theocracy’ - which frankly is the problem the left has with Romney, they know so little about religion, they cannot tell the difference between all of these categories - Romney’s unique problem is from the right.]
Food for thought when it comes to religion, government and media.
A prediction for ‘08 from a blogger I have never heard of, made fascinating by the fact that he is a black Republican from Texas.
The religious question as a diversionary tactic? If only I could be convinced that a lot of my conservative evangelical brethren were not religous bigots, it’s an argument that might make sense, but alas. [Lowell adds: I think Romney will see more of this, because of a combination of factors. Those include: hard-core conservative animosity against anyone who has not been ideologically pure for a long enough time; true religious bigotry against Mormons, like that of the letter-writer quoted here; the evolution in Romney’s views on some key issues, like abortion; and the positions he had to take in order to get elected to statewide office in Massachusetts - the bluest of states. So Romney is vulnerable on ideological grounds. Like John, I wonder if some religious conservatives won’t use ideology as a substitute for attacking him on religious grounds. I also wonder how Romney will deal with the ideological chinks in his armor.]
