Voting against Romney because of distaste for Mormon doctrine would not violate the text of the “no religious text clause,” but would certainly violate its spirit.

You’re right – voters can ast as they see fit. I think Noval’s comment was meant to be illustrative and not legal.

The basic point is that many evangelicals are eliminating Romney solely becasue he is Mormon – american tradition would indicate that voters should think a little more deeply than that, which is what this blog is all about.

I’m sorry, but the idea that the religious test clause restricts voter choice on Election Day is even sillier than the notion that it restricts the power of Senators to vote against nominees (the last context in which this came up).
